Councillor Ken Avey passes away, 25th June 2014

It is with deep regret that the Town Council has learned that Cllr Ken Avey has passed away this morning. Ken became a member of the Town Council in 2003 and was the only person since the Town Council was created in 1973 to have held the office of Town Mayor twice, in 2004 and 2011. He was also a member of the District Council, being elected for Hemnall Ward in 2011. Ken was passionate about Epping and was dedicated to protecting the character of the Town. He was well known for his forthright views, particularly about planning and was never afriad to tackle the difficult issues head on. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Memorial Service held for HMS Sickle

A MEMORIAL service held at St John's Church, Epping on 18th June has commemorated the loss with all hands of HMS submarine Sickle, the warship adopted by the towns of Epping and Harlow during warship week in 1942. The service also saw the dedication of a plaque in the Garden of Remembrance and the laying of wreaths to remember the 50 men who lost their lives 70 years ago. Relatives of the servicemen joined civic leaders as a 100-strong congregation for the service which was led by Rev'd Geoffrey Connor and began with the parading of the standards of the Royal British Legion, the Submariners Association, the Royal Naval Association and the Air Training Cadets. HMS Sickle Memorial Event 18th June 2014

On 18th June it will be 70 years since the loss with all hands of HMS Sickle, the warship adopted by the towns of Epping and Harlow during warship week in 1942. The people of Epping, Harlow and villages raised £176,000 to sponsor the vessel, which was commissioned in December 1942. Sickle spent most of her active service in the Mediterranean. Information about Race Day: Tour de France in Epping 7th July 2014

There can surely be nobody who is still unaware that the Tour de France is coming to Essex on July 7th. The County and District Councils have provided leaflets and newsletters to every home detailing the route, the timings, the disruption, the expected crowds.
